Clontarf at Narrandera High School
The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and by doing so, equips them to participate more meaningfully in society.
Clontarf Newsletter
Our boys participate in a wide range of activities each term, and we're excited to share their achievements and experiences with you. To keep you updated, they release a newsletter every term highlighting what they've been up to. You can find their latest newsletter below.
What we do
Support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to
- Go to school
- Finish Year 12
- Get a job/further study
Method of operation.
Partner with schools.
Create Clontarf academies to attract and help keep young men at school.
Staff with men Employ full-time staff (25:1), locally-based and suitably trained staff to capture participants’ respect and trust.
Develop positive attitudes
Our programmes enable the development of self-esteem and positive attitudes towards health, education and employment.
Assist with employment and provide ongoing support
We continue to work with graduates.
Our academy and employment staff work with employers to develop the necessary mentoring and support for
as long as required.
Sport as a vehicle
Using the passion Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys have for Aussie Rules and Rugby League allows Clontarf to attract the boys to school. But it is not a sporting programme.
We engage with a variety of tools.
Developing strong RELATIONSHIPS is at the heart of everything we do.
Schools and community
All enrolled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males can join (no $ cost).
It’s optional and requires parental consent (+90%).
Our style is very positive with a long-term behavioural change rather than behaviour management focus.
Schools and community
We support the boys to be active members of the school community.
We support the school’s behaviour management plan and values.
We form strong relationships with all school staff.
We are subject to Education Department Policies and Procedures around duty of care.
Be active in the community
- Develop a strong sense of empathy and value ‘giving back’
- Clean Up Australia Day
- Relay For Life
- Backyard blitz
- Tree planting
- Clinics for primary schools
Family:
- Connect with family
- Home visits
- Relay positive news
- Have family events such as a Mother’s Day Lunch
- Can act as a link between school and home
- Visit academy room
Support beyond school
Develop a ‘pathway to employment’ for each participant and assist him to obtain a meaningful ‘job of choice.’
Continue mentoring.
Act like family and stay in their lives
